How to Avoid One of the Biggest Traps Holding You Back from Your Dreams

How to Stop Making Excuses and Start Making Things Happen

There is a trap I call The Whirlpool of ‘When’. It’s getting caught in the habit of not taking action right away on things that are important to you, and saying you’ll do it ‘later’. Putting things off until another time is like getting caught in a never-ending whirlpool – you go nowhere, while your dreams go down the drain!

A lot of people fall into the habit of saying, “Oh, I’ll do it next year, or I’ll do it when…”

“I’ll start saving money when I make more money.”

“I’ll go back to school and finish my degree when I have more time.”

“I’ll improve my eating habits when the holiday season is over!”

“I’ll travel when I retire.”

Waiting till ‘when’ happens is a fallacy.  Why? Because tomorrow is not a sure thing. I’ve met so many people who thought that tomorrow was guaranteed, and then they died way too early from an accident, illness, or some other tragedy. Sometimes circumstances change and you don’t have the opportunity anymore, or you just age and don’t have the strength or energy to do it!

This fallacy of “I can do it when…” is the wrong type of thinking. Anybody that’s successful doesn’t take a month, a year, or a decade to decide to take action, they do it the next minute. If it’s worth doing. It’s worth doing now.

There’s no such thing as a convenient time

I’ve found that pursuing goals is never convenient. It always seems like things will be better later, once you have your ducks in a row, but as soon as you think you’ve got it all together, more ducklings hatch! There is no such thing as the perfect time, except that the perfect time to take some kind of action for forward momentum is NOW!

“Don’t wait. The time will never be just right.”

– Napoleon Hill – American self-help author best known for his book Think and Grow Rich

Fear of what you might ‘leap into’

The old saying, ‘Look before you leap’ has some merit, but too often people get stuck trying to figure everything out before they even take one step forward! How can you know all the steps until you take the first one and see where it takes you? Stop trying to figure it all out first! You never will get it all planned perfectly. Even if you make the perfect plan, I guarantee it will change somewhere along the line!

If you are stuck trying to figure out how you’re going to do everything before even starting, then it’s time to turn your “How?” into Now! You’ll figure it out as you go. The knowing is in the going! You’ll know what to do next when you first do something!

“It’s time to turn your “How?” into Now. The knowing is in the going!”

– Jae Park

Where would you be now if you’d already taken action?

I bet if you took an inventory of the things you’ve put off, you wish you would have started them long ago! If we’d all started saving and investing, even a small amount, when we were in our 20’s, the compound interest would have us in a much better position today! Every summer many people wish they would have started working out last fall!

“A year from now you will wish you had started today”

– Jae Park

Regret is another trap we need to avoid! We can’t go back in time, but we can start today! You can’t go back and do anything, but you can develop the habit of taking action now!

Sometimes a goal seems big, but it happens one step at a time. You have to take the first step, then just keep going! The important thing is to stop waiting until ‘when’ the time is better. Do something now to keep the dream alive and growing.

Imagine your future self a year from now. What do you wish they were saying to you?

  • “Way to go! Good job!”
  • “Look what happened because you took action now!”
  • “It wasn’t easy, but you did it!”

How do you want that future self to feel?

  • A sense of personal accomplishment?
  • Satisfaction and self-confidence?
  • Excitement at the momentum you’ve built from getting the ball rolling?

Picture the end goal and work your way back so you know the first step you need to take, and then do it! The magic happens when you break out of the ‘whirlpool of when’ and take a step towards your dreams now!
